Asbestos Exposure Symptoms and How Much Do You Know?

It is a big surprise just how little people know about Asbestos Exposure Symptoms. Sure people like me whose dad suffered the last few years of his life from lung cancer due to asbestos exposure know the dangers. But what about you? The dangers of asbestos are well known and the information has been around for thousands of years. Yet most people are unaware of the dangers let alone the asbestos exposure symptoms.

Most likely one of the major reasons is that more often than not no one connects the dots. Asbestos exposure symptoms do not show up for sometimes 20 to as much as 40 years later. There are a few cases of people that experience symptoms immediately but the majority takes many years before the experience any symptoms at all.

Asbestos Exposure Symptoms and The Long Term Risk Factors

Here are some additional risk factors you should be aware of as it pertains to asbestos exposure symptoms:

The type of asbestos you were exposed to?

For how long were you exposed to asbestos?

Was there any lung diseases to start with?

Is the exposed person a smoker? Asbestos exposure and the problems related to it are much more dangerous to smokers.

<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1579546846/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=busathominc-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=1579546846" target=_blank">
Fatal Deception (What you don't know can kill you!)

The type of asbestos exposure is important because one type is much more toxic than the other.

As you will note from the asbestos description the two types one being thin fibers that are long and microscopic then there is the wide fibers that are short and wide.

Exposure of the thin fiber that is long and thin will travel deeper into the lungs and become lodged there never getting out of the lungs.

It is believed that this type of fiber is the most dangerous for this reason. Exposure to the wide short asbestos fibers they will generally stay in the upper part of the lung which makes them somewhat less toxic.

Deeper in the lungs of the pleura region tissue is much more susceptible to asbestos poisoning then the upper part of the lung.

All asbestos exposure is dangerous so the type of exposure is good to know besides lung cancer there are many other lung problems related to asbestos exposure.

Warning: This Book May Be Hazardous to Your Blood Pressure.

Let me say right up front that I am a steadfast supporter of the free market. However, it serves neither the free market nor humanity when giant corporations are run by people who are no better than mass murderers. Exaggeration? Read this book and see if you still think so. I read “Fatal Deception” because a friend of mine and his wife acquired a vacation cabin in Libby, Montana a few years back. When newspaper reports began appearing about the widespread asbestos poisoning there, I asked if that was the same town. “Yep,” he replied with a disgusted sigh. “We call it our own little Three Mile Island, Montana.” (Fortunately, the relative who’d given them the cabin later demanded it back.)
Skin Asbestos Exposure Symptoms

Exposure to the skin and the symptoms related to it are not as common as they once were. Although even with the precautions in place today asbestos skin exposure can still occur.

So here is a short list of skin asbestos exposure symptoms to be aware of so you can see a doctor as soon as possible for the recommended treatments:

When the hands are exposed to asbestos from cement or other products a rash that is very profuse can appear. Always ware protection on the hands to avoid exposure even if you already know the materials do-not contain asbestos as a standard precaution.

Skin exposure can show up as small pimples and sometimes they may appear to be light blue.

One of the dangers is a person that is exposed to asbestos can also expose other family members from being near them and touching their clothing. Should you suspect a family member has asbestos exposure symptoms and may not know? It would be very important for all the family members to see a health professional. Do not just brush it off as something random and forget about it because serious health issues can and do occur for casual contact with someone who has been exposed to asbestos.

In the early days protective gear was not a requirement like today and many were exposed and died. Along with family member that received just casual asbestos exposure. Many would just ignore the asbestos exposure symptoms because they thought like many do still today that their life is not in danger. Today we have the opportunity to wear protective clothing and gear to protect ourselves and our families. So do not give it a second thought always put one the protective gear. The follow the removal and clean up procedures before going out is public of home to the family.

Simple precautions taken back when dad worked around deadly asbestos would mean he would still be around today. Make sure your loved one are protected and always be on the lookout for Asbestos Exposure Symptoms they could save yours and your family’s life!

How Asbestos Fibers Damage Tissue

From some of the more recent studies the discovery that asbestos fibers are the cause of mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a kind of cancer that has a detrimental effect on the lining of the lungs and can affect the heart and abdominal area. Scientists’ have zeroed in on the primary cause for this cancer and other health related problems. Asbestos fibers that are inhaled get lodged in the body. There is no known method of getting them out of the body once they become lodged. When this occurs the fibers cause an irritation that is linked to malignant mesothelioma. The scientists know the cause very well but how it turns into cancer is still unknown.

The process occurs when the body inhales the fibers. The body’s response is to produce mucus that is supposed to surround the irritating fibers. The body’s response is to cough which meant to expel the mucus and the irritating fibers. The body is an amazing machine as it has a backup method in the immune system to rid the body of the irritant. The second method is called “phagocytosis” that under normal conditions would also work. After many years of weakening of the natural immune system from our environment it just does not work as well as it should.

Asbestos Fibers Danger

Lorella Pascolo headed a scientific study in Italy with the synchrotron soft X-Ray imaging. The X-Ray Fluorescence microscopy was use to study the chemical makeup of the mesothelioma. Some interesting facts were discovered. They learned how the chemicals involved could dictate the body’s response to the asbestos fibers.

Asbestos Fibers Chemical Analysis

The studies performed in the past did not have the ability to reveal the material that was lodged in the affected tissues. The unique new technique used makes use of a chemical analysis of the asbestos fibers. This reveals the internal mechanism that happens when the fibers lodge in and start their damage to the tissues.

Scientists found out that the body’s natural defense was to construct a casing around the contaminating fibers. Their belief was this casing was a natural protective mechanism. This mechanism was collectively named “asbestos body”. The idea of the study was to see if they could differentiate between the casing and the asbestos fibers. They were able to do this by measuring the iron, magnesium and oxygen content. The result was the casing primarily consisted of iron, magnesium and oxygen. The asbestos fibers were very high in silicon as suspected.

It was also postulated that the surrounding tissue that tested very high in iron may be generating oxidative stress leading to cellular damage. The metals in the asbestos fibers are thought to responsible for the carcinogenic properties. A study of two most carcinogenic forms of asbestos crocidolite and amosite are more than 30% iron. Although not confirmed iron rich proteins from the embedded fibers increase the DNA damage which is believed to turn the tissues cancerous.

Mesothelioma has no known cure and most diagnosed live less than a year. The cancer is terminal and as many as 2 to 3000 people are diagnosed with the deadly disease every year in the United States. There are many more cases in the other industrialized countries of the world that take fewer precautions. There is much more asbestos awareness training needed the world over.

There are high hopes that a much better understanding of the chemical elements will lead to how the mesothelioma develops into cancer. This is thought that a deeper study of the chemical elements related to asbestos fibers may lead to more effective treatments of the disease.

So what is asbestos management needed for? Asbestos being a commonly used material is a mineral that is found all over the world. It is a mineral silicate that is very durable and has insulating properties that are resistant to fire, chemicals and electricity.

Asbestos Management Plans

Asbestos is cheap and very easy to use and the value of its properties is not replaced by some other mineral or material. The use of the material goes back thousands of years. It is commonly referred to as the miracle mineral and the industrial revolution has built its back on thousands of products that make good use of asbestos insulating properties.

Prior to the 80s the material is in everything which is why and asbestos management plan is needed. The dangers of asbestos go back a long way. The Greeks and Romans noted long ago the toxic nature of the minerals. Long ago they would have slaves weaving asbestos into cloth. The slaves would end up with breathing and lung problems.

Asbestos Management Services

Asbestos Management and Control (Order Today!)

The services that manage asbestos related issues today do not just comply with all the asbestos regulations and standards requirements they exceed them. This is done to insure the safety of their employees and all who could suffer from asbestos exposure.

Services that are available always include experts that are very well trained experts. This is true because they know the dangers involved and understand the government asbestos regulations in place do not eliminate the risks. The asbestos regulations that are put in place are only meant to minimize the risk not completely eliminate it. The asbestos management services do their very best to eliminate the risks involved to workers and people near the cleanup sites.

Employing a company to manage asbestos related problems it is always best to hire a full service company. A full service company is one that does the whole job of safe removal and safely disposes of the contaminated materials. The multi-company idea will not only cost more but gaps and loopholes in the hand-off process can create unnecessary risk.

Risk management is only ever as good as the plan and must be in a constant state of update. Asbestos management is a live process in a constant state of change keeping the plan relevant. Dealing with any kind of hazardous materials any gaps in the process can post a danger to employees and bystanders.

Asbestos use over the years especially the 19th and 20th centuries today still pose great risks. From factories involved in the manufacture of products and building materials that make use of asbestos and older constructed factories involved in other operations. Both today post great risks to employees and anyone why might come in contact.

Many have made the sad mistake in assuming building and construction materials were safe once installed. When you consider all the fire proofing, insulation from heat, flooring, roofing and siding that must be replace today. The huge need for asbestos management companies with services to handle all aspects of removal and disposal with risk eliminated becomes clear.

For demolition and remodeling they always post risks if the original construction was prior to the 80s. Many built after this date can also require some prior asbestos testing in some cases. Every project must have a robust asbestos management plan performed by highly trained experts to eliminate any risks.

Where and How We Get Asbestos Exposure

The most common method of asbestos exposure is by inhaling the asbestos fibers. There are far too many methods asbestos fibers get into the air in the first place. The second method is the fibers can be swallowed by drinking contaminated drinking water. Asbestos fibers that become airborne can land on exposed food and then the food is eaten.

Because of the nature of asbestos fibers once they get into the body by ingesting or inhaling them it becomes almost impossible for the body to expel them. The fibers can lodge into the lungs if inhaled and almost anywhere in the body if ingested. The body can not break down the fibers and over the years they irritate and inflame the tissue they are lodged in.

Natural Occurring Asbestos Exposure

Asbestos Exposure Annotated Research Guide to Internet References!

Asbestos is a naturally occurring substance in many parts of the world. Very often the substance is on the surface or close to the surface. In this case the fibers can be disturbed by almost anything. A breeze can make the particles to become airborne. One of the common forms of asbestos is found in vermiculite. Mining vermiculite has gone on for many years and sold in countries all over the world. The mining processes caused the release of asbestos fibers into the air and pose a serious threat to anyone who inhaled the fibers.

Occupational Asbestos Exposure

This type of exposure happens more often when people work around asbestos. There are far too many occupations where asbestos exposure occurs. Of course mining the material is the biggest offender but many other types of industry make use of the material. The rules and regulations for the proper care and handling of asbestos have helped over the years. The bans of the use in construction materials have also done some good.

With the bans on the use that occurred in the late 1970s has done nothing for all the construction that occurred prior to the ban. The possibility of asbestos exposure is still very high when building demolition occurs or any remodeling of any older buildings of homes. People who like to do their own remodeling risk asbestos exposure when they don’t have the materials tested first.

The fire-proof properties of asbestos make use of the material very popular in many different things. Fireman’s clothing to protect them while fighting fires is made out of asbestos.

Modern Day Asbestos Exposure

With no safe level of asbestos exposure allowed by the EPA (environmental protection agency) the all out bans put in place in the mid to late 80s has done little in elimination of asbestos all around us. Asbestos exposure is said that it is not possible to totally eliminate so limits have been set by OSHA and the EPA to keep exposure to minimums.

With many regulatory laws in place asbestos awareness is one of the best tools in the fight against exposure. Employees should receive asbestos awareness training when their environment could lead to possible asbestos exposure.

Asbestos Siding is a Common Building Material

Do you live in a home with asbestos siding? Many would be surprised at the numbers of people that would answer yes to that question. But it is not surprising because between the 30s to the 70s asbestos was and still is a valued durable fire-proof material. The major problem is it is considered to be a carcinogen and very dangerous to humans.

Asbestos Siding and Asbestos Shingles are They Safe?

Most building materials made with asbestos is so durable that in many cases materials like asbestos siding or asbestos shingles last more than 100 years in many cases. What makes these materials unsafe is when the siding or shingles get broken or have become deteriorated to the point the material starts breaking down. At this point the fibrous asbestos can become airborne and people can inhale it. Asbestos abatement contractors can seal the material so it is not dangerous to people.

If asbestos siding is properly installed and safely sealed the insulating effect and durability and fire-proofing capability the material adds to the home is second to none. Many materials that contain asbestos are banned from use. But in spite of all the dangers faced by contractors that provide professional handling there are still some that use some of these materials.

Asbestos Siding Removal

Asbestos siding removal can be dangerous and in your state there may be laws that forbid a person that is not a licensed asbestos abatement contractor to do so. If it is allowed and you try to do it yourself the important thing is that you or anyone else should not come in contact with the fibers. When the fibers escape into the air they can be inhaled and pose a serious health risk.

No one will ever recommend you remove asbestos siding by yourself. Even if the local laws allow it is still recommended to hire an asbestos contractor to handle the removal.

Proper handling of asbestos siding for removal will require you to use a mister to dampen the material before removal. Wetting down the material will minimize the fibers escaping into the air. Continue to wet down the contaminated material as you work to remove it so no fibers are released into the air. Asbestos siding or roofing tiles are often nailed on you will want to take special care removing the nails. Special care should be taken not to break the material while removing. Extra care should be taken with the material that is removed. Keep wet until placed in plastic storage bags to keep any fibers from getting into the air. If the removed material is just left lying around it become very easy to step on it and cause damage which make the fibers to escape into the air.

Another important point never under any circumstances reuse any of the material over again. Not only is it not safe it can be against the law to reuse any material in your area.

Always double check with the local laws concerning asbestos removal. In many cases it can be illegal to attempt the job of removal yourself. In all cases it is safer for the job to be performed by an asbestos removal contractor. Trained professional safely can handle removal and disposal of the asbestos siding with no danger to anyone.

What is an Asbestos Popcorn Ceiling?

Sometimes referred to as an acoustic ceiling is a term that started in the late 50s. It was a quick and easy ceiling treatment very commonly used in residential construction. The great thing about it was it added a little flair to the ceilings of a home. When normally ceilings are flat dull and boring but the cottage cheese look added some personality. Sometimes glitter was added to the mix to give the twinkling affect like stars.

A number of materials were used over the years to make the textured ceilings one of which was asbestos. Other types of material used were paper and Styrofoam. Asbestos used in building materials got banned in 1976 which allowed builders to use up the material they had left in stock. So you may find asbestos popcorn ceilings in homes built as late as 1984.

The popcorn ceiling fell out of favor over the years for many reasons. One is that is gets dirty very easy and is impossible to clean. Builder’s still like to use it from time to time because it covers a multitude of sins and cheap to install.

How to Remove an Asbestos Popcorn Ceiling

First thing you want to know is it an asbestos popcorn ceiling? Was the home built prior to 1984 even the homes that had some remodeling done prior to this time frame? To determine if the popcorn ceiling contains asbestos, testing may be required for verification before you try to remove it.

For the do-it-yourself person you can safely moisten four small spots of about one square inch. Then with a putty knife scrape the material into a zip lock plastic bag. Refer to asbestos testing for information on where to get it safely tested.

Removing the Asbestos Popcorn Ceiling

When you get the results back and asbestos is found in the material an asbestos abatement contractor will be needed to remove or seal up the contaminated ceiling. Trying to remove the contaminated material on your own is very unsafe. Asbestos removal causes the fibers to become airborne and the fibers can be inhaled by anyone. The fibers can create many unwanted health problems.

It is even possible the acoustic ceiling in your older home may be in good shape. Every now and then popcorn ceilings received a cost of paint which did an excellent job of sealing them. If you have the older ceiling that was painted and want to remove it this type of asbestos popcorn ceiling should only be removed by an asbestos removal contractor. The spray water method will not work on a painted popcorn ceiling.

Other solutions involve installing tiles or other ceiling material over the asbestos popcorn ceiling. Many times this is a much safer way of dealing with the problem. The reason is the asbestos fibers and not disturbed so no fibers are released into the air in your home.

Once you have determined the popcorn ceiling is made of a safe material is can easily be removed. It is messy but getting it off the ceilings is not very difficult at all.

You will need to remove all your furniture and or cover it along with your carpet. Plastic tarps to cover everything work best removing the furniture insures you have room to work safely.

There are two ways to do the job yourself. The best way is a spray bottle of water and a scraper. When you wet down the popcorn it scrapes of very easy. You only need to dampen the area you are removing. Too much water will stain the ceiling. The second choice is to sand it off but the dust created by this gets into everything and makes a horrible mess. This method is best left up to professional contractors that can deal with all the dust.

Removing a popcorn ceiling is not the hardest thing there is with a little preparation and safety the process can be painless. The asbestos popcorn ceiling is best left up to the asbestos contractor.

There are many business and industry leaders that still have not acquired the asbestos awareness training for their employees and companies. Sure some do a wonderful job but others fail and put many at risk. Just having a basic knowledge of asbestos and the dangers connected with it can be life saving. If employees know what it is and how to recognize it dangerous exposure can be avoided.

Asbestos Awareness Training – What is asbestos?

It is a fibrous mineral found just about every place on the planet. And it’s insulating capabilities just about the best of anything that can be used. Over the years asbestos minerals have been used in building materials, products that require fireproofing, products that require filtering and massive use in the shipping industry. As long as the fibrous particles are contained there is no danger. But when asbestos turns in to tiny particles it becomes airborne. The small fibers are inhaled and this is where the dangers come from. The inhaled particles cause many types of dangerous asbestos related diseases.

Why is Asbestos Awareness Training so Crucial

Most buildings constructed as late as 1986 could contain asbestos related materials. The older the buildings the more dangers there are because as the older materials deteriorate and break down the fibers become tiny particles that spread through the air and are inhaled. The historical use of asbestos goes back 4500 years and in the late 1800s saw the opening of some of the first asbestos commercial mining operations.

Training provides a good understanding of how to avoid asbestos and where it could be located. The general rule is to assume all materials contain asbestos and even more so in older buildings. Unless the fact is confirmed the materials do not contain asbestos. Ceiling tiles, floor tiles, plumbing and electrical insulation provide no warnings that they contain asbestos.

Asbestos is known to be one of the greatest causes of death related to the dangers of being in the workplace in England. There are many asbestos diseases and health related problems. Some of the most well known are mesothelioma and lung cancer. This fact alone makes asbestos awareness training an essential requirement for any workforce. All workers in the following fields:

Ship Builders

Builders

Electricians

Roofers

Steel Workers

Plumbers

There are others as well but the training is low cost and it could save them their lives.

The only way to be sure is professional asbestos testing to verify if the material contains the dangerous material. Asbestos surveys are conducted by companies licensed in asbestos abatement can determine if the material is dangerous and must be removed.

In homes, schools or any commercial buildings built prior to 1986 it is very important to never disturb the older materials. This means do not break, cut, drill, hammer or do any sawing that could possibly damage the materials that contain the dangerous asbestos materials.

Asbestos training provides you with all the rules and regulations to comply with to insure safety for everyone that could come in contact with the dangerous material. There are many ways to deal with asbestos abatement such as asbestos removal, or it may be recommended to seal the dangerous material to block the spread of the dangerous fibers. Sealing is sometimes much safer for the environment bases on the recommendations of an asbestos contractor.

Awareness training is low cost and there are many ways to get your employees trained today that do not cost a lot. The online recommendations for asbestos awareness training are plentiful and comply with all the OSHA regulations and certifications.

Asbestos testing and one major reason it is required is because a person cannot tell that the material he is looking at contains the material fibers. Under some circumstances when you do not know if some materials contain asbestos it is best to treat them as if they do. Until the testing is preformed either by yourself or a professional you will want to take precautions.

Do It Yourself Asbestos Testing

Do it yourself asbestos testing kits are readily available from many sources today. Maybe the easiest place to order a testing kit is from the internet. The big question everyone would like to know up front is? Are do-it-yourself asbestos testing kits a reliable method of finding out if you have asbestos contamination or not?

The testing kits are low cost and most often just contain simple plastic gloves and plastic bags to return the samples collected to a professional testing facility. The reports that you get back can be a little hard for the average person to decipher at times but it can be done. The tests are reliable and safe.

Some of the asbestos testing kits include the cost of the laboratory charges and some do not. The do-it-yourself kits only contain the materials needed to do the sampling safely. The samples then are sent into a certified testing facility to get verified results.

When is Asbestos Testing Needed?

Homes and buildings built at late as 1986 could contain the banned construction materials with asbestos. Asbestos is dangerous if the fibers can be inhaled and skin irritation can occur if it comes in contact with it. In many cases there is no danger is the asbestos is contained.

Building renovation or home repairs to one of these older structures should have a professional test for asbestos. The other case would be just do the repairs or renovation as if there is asbestos contamination there without testing. The better companies will treat older homes and buildings as if they contain asbestos anyway. So no risk of exposure by allowing it to become airborne is ever permitted.

Other cases may provide you a recommendation of it is in good shape and it would be less hazardous to leave the older material undisturbed.

Many cases of exposure occur when renovation is done on an older structure. When there is a lot deterioration of an older structure and airborne particles can post a danger. If there is no damage from deterioration or from restoration the fibers are unlikely to break off and become airborne.

For the older home with deterioration it would be recommended to hire a contractor specializes in not only the asbestos testing but also the clean up and asbestos removal. A contractor of this type will be bonded and maintain certifications that they follow all the safe procedures needed for asbestos abatement. Also check for referrals to insure their goal is safety first for their clients and their employees.

With older construction you will most often find asbestos is floor tiling, insulation, roofing and siding and the hazardous material can be in almost anything. So having asbestos testing performed before renovations is always recommended.

One thing for sure all during the 20th century the use of asbestos was a very popular mineral used for many things and has created a major need for asbestos abatement. It is very durable, heat resistant and the insulating qualities were second to none. With popularity like this today the need for asbestos abatement becomes a very important issue.

With just building materials alone more than 3000 different products were manufactured with asbestos in the mix. Thankfully it was in the mid 1970s that the general public began finding out about the dangers of breathing asbestos fibers. The information began spreading about all the deadly lung diseases that were caused by the fibers.

Products that contained asbestos were banned which allowed the remaining building materials to still be used. Today presents a much different story. With the slight hint of asbestos fibers becoming airborne containment becomes essential for asbestos abatement.

There are no dangers as long as the asbestos fibers become airborne. Once the fibers reach the open air then the danger exists that any unsuspecting person could breathe in the deadly fibers.

Professional Asbestos Abatement

Asbestos Abatement

Just doing a little simple home remodeling can be very dangerous with any chance of the dangerous asbestos fibers being released into the air.

If you are up-to-date on all of the latest safety guidelines it may be possible for you to do the job safely. If not it is highly recommended for you to hire a licensed professional to properly handle the asbestos abatement needed to do the job safely.

The do-it-yourself person believes he can save money and lower expenses without the professional asbestos abatement company. When you consider that even if you do the job yourself you will still need to follow the local laws and guidelines to properly handle the safety procedures.

Just consider the cost of the extra protection you will need to do the job safely. This short list will give you an idea:

Protective Boots

Protective Clothing

Gloves for Hand Protection

Respirators

Protective Eye Ware

All of this equipment is must be rented or purchased to do the asbestos abatement safely. And remember this equipment is needed for every person who will access the contaminated environment as a helper or just looking.

In the case where it is unknown if the materials contain asbestos that will be worked with asbestos testing will need to be done by an accredited asbestos testing facility. Many cases require microscopic examination to verify if there is a risk. When the risk is verified the presents of asbestos exists it leaves you with a couple of possible options. If the materials are in top condition they may not present any immediate hazard. On the other hand if the materials are in poor condition meaning fibers could be released into the air proper asbestos abatement disposal and elimination is required.

Experienced Asbestos Abatement Contractors

The experienced asbestos removal contractor will seal in the area first with plastic. This step keeps the asbestos contained in the sealed area. Then the contractor and his workers will enter with protective boots, clothing and gloves including eye protection and respirators. For severe cases to remove asbestos where the fibers have the possibility of becoming airborne they wet them down to begin the removal process. This keeps the fibers from becoming airborne. All the asbestos materials are removed are place into bags that keep it secure for transportation to disposal site.

Asbestos elimination is a very risky business when it is not performed is accordance with the regulations and local laws. It is very important to have a very good understanding of all the safety regulations and laws before undertaking a remodeling job on your own. If there is a hazard consult the asbestos abatement contractor first and get estimates first.

There are still many homes and buildings that need asbestos removal in the U.S. and very often go unchecked.

One of the most common forms of asbestos used in construction was spray applied thermal insulation systems that are flame retardant.

This type of material containing asbestos was often (flocked) in to create a textured surface. The process is depositing small fiber particles on a surface to give a textured surface.

You are very likely to still see buildings and homes today that still have flocked acoustic ceilings. These were the “popcorn ceilings” a process banned in the U.S. back in 1978.

The bad part allowed installers to use up all their remaining material. So homes and buildings could have this type of acoustic ceiling asbestos installed as late as 1986.

To Be Sure When Asbestos Removal is Required

The one way to be sure when asbestos removal is required is to have it tested. This is done by taking a small sample and submitting it to an accredited laboratory for testing and verification.

Asbestos Removal Accredited Testing

NIST (National Institute for Standards and Technology) provides a list of accredited laboratories do asbestos testing. The NVLAP (National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program) can be contacted at the following websites:

The Polarized Light Microscopy Test Method

The Transmission Electron Microscopy Test Method

It is always possible that the method used in installation may not pose any risk. Some of the methods used to apply the asbestos was done in such a way that the fibers could not become dislodged so they could not be inhaled. In this case the asbestos poses no risks.

When the flocking method is used to apply asbestos the fibers do drop off and pose hazards, especially when workers need to drill holes to install wiring, cables and pipes. Many workers do use the proper protection in such cases but with the release of the toxic fibers pose a danger to others.

In such cases when asbestos is present very stringent procedures are required.

The airborne dust created from asbestos fibers even has its own name special name “friable”. As an example floor tiles made from asbestos are considered non-friable. But, the popcorn ceiling is considered extremely friable.

Asbestos Removal Procedures

When people will still be in a building when removal is to be perform proper procedures for relocation must be followed temporarily. The area of the building must be sealed off to prevent any contamination reaching the other parts of the building.

Some of the methods used install polyethylene film with duct tape. HEPA filters are installed to create negative air flow. The asbestos fibers are blocked from getting into the surrounding areas. The protected area pulls fresh air in not allowing asbestos fibers in.

Asbestos removal with a vacuum cleaner can only be done with an asbestos containment class H vacuum. The class H vacuum is designed for this purpose.

A standard vacuum with a HEPA filter cannot be used because they still spread asbestos fibers into the air.

In very severe cases some buildings need to be closed off from any use and must be sealed off from the outside air. Some cases can contaminate the outside air causing a danger during asbestos removal.

There are some cases where removal is not used as a means of asbestos abatement. In special cases the asbestos containing materials are sealed of with some type of encapsulation method to close off any exposure to the fibers in a building. When this is possible asbestos removal is not required.

Still there are other cases where the asbestos removal in a building must be safely performed even before the building can demolished. Performing asbestos removal before demolition can take place can be a very costly, taking a lot longer than normal.
